“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” – Helen Keller
Through communication, care, and a vision of growth the School District of Mauston was involved to expand the infrastructure that now supports and serves Sharing Supper. The same volunteers and sponsors that are so faithful moved as well to facilitate the meal with a network of school personnel, new sponsors, and groups. I am the Assistant High School Principal and liaison to Sharing Supper with the belief that the effort I put in is returned 10 fold through the positive community use of a building they own, a meal that supplies more than caloric intake, and a forum that transfers information to benefit our community. To quote Heidi Randall, Director of Aging Programs, “A price tag cannot be placed on getting to know your neighbor across the table from you in conversation while sharing a meal. Friends meeting friends at one meal blossoms into friends meeting each other at the door the next month, and the circle of community grows even larger.”
That community comes to Sharing Supper and receives community information that enriches their lives in a wide range of. There have been blood pressure checks, retirement program information, tomato sets, bingo, and notices of upcoming events to grow community. The Kids Corner of Sharing Supper, directed by Sara Wurster, is an activity corner for school age children that not only entertains and educates but allows parents to visit with other community members resting in the knowledge their children are being taken care of.
Donna McGinley stated it best when she wrote “A cohesive, healthy community must be able to communicate with itself in positive, creative, and caring ways. Sharing Supper in Mauston has met this goal for more than five years and continues to function sustainably”.
Margie shares her talents with those interested in replicating this model of an open dining program that will serve as a vehicle that will Build Community.
